What's in the Sunshine Coast's tap water?

Most of the Sunshine Coast's drinking water comes from Baroon Pocket Dam (Lake Baroon) in the Blackall Ranges and Ewen Maddock Dam, treated mainly at the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant, which supplies around 75% of the region's drinking water. Seqwater manages the bulk supply and catchments; Unitywater distributes the water to homes and businesses across Caloundra, Maroochydore, Noosa and beyond. Other plants (Image Flat, Lake Macdonald and Ewen Maddock) serve specific areas, and the Northern Pipeline Interconnector links the region into the wider SEQ Water Grid, so during dry spells, some supply can come from as far as North Pine Dam near Brisbane.

Two things shape the Sunshine Coast's water. First, like the rest of the SEQ grid, it's disinfected with chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) rather than free chlorine — more stable through the network, but with a distinctive taste and harder to filter than ordinary chlorine. Second, the local catchments are vulnerable to weather events: after heavy rain (such as the 2022 floods) Seqwater has had to step up treatment to manage elevated sediment and organic matter, which can affect taste and clarity. Seqwater also invests in catchment protection around Baroon Pocket to keep source water clean. Fluoride is added at controlled levels.

Sunshine Coast tap water is safe to drink and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. The reasons people filter it are the chloramine taste and the occasional post-rain change in taste and clarity.

Why use a filtered water cooler on the Sunshine Coast?

On the Sunshine Coast, a filtered water cooler mainly improves taste — removing the chloramine flavour and capturing sediment — while giving you instant hot and cold water on demand. Quality activated-carbon filtration reduces the chloramine taste that many residents notice, and sediment stages help with the particles and organic matter that can rise after heavy rain. The water here is on the softer side, so the benefit is taste and clarity rather than scale reduction.

For Sunshine Coast offices and homes, that means consistently fresh-tasting tea, coffee and drinking water — no chloramine aftertaste, and steadier quality even when the weather affects the supply.

How our 8-Stage KDF filtration works

Our coolers use an 8-stage KDF filter that passes water through sediment, activated carbon, KDF media, ceramic and mineral stages to reduce chloramine taste, sediment and heavy metals while balancing pH. The activated-carbon stages target the chloramine taste and odour; the sediment and ceramic stages capture particles (useful after wet-weather events); the KDF media targets heavy metals and inhibits bacterial growth; and the mineral stages give a smoother, slightly alkaline finish. Note that carbon-based filtration is designed to improve taste, odour and clarity — it is not intended to remove fluoride, which is added at controlled levels.

FAQs

  • Where does Sunshine Coast tap water come from? Mostly from Baroon Pocket Dam (Lake Baroon) and Ewen Maddock Dam, treated at the Landers Shute plant, which supplies around 75% of the region. Seqwater manages the bulk supply and Unitywater distributes it. During dry spells, water can also come from elsewhere in the SEQ grid via the Northern Pipeline Interconnector.
  • Does Sunshine Coast water have chlorine or chloramine? Like all of the SEQ Water Grid, Sunshine Coast water is disinfected with chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia), not free chlorine. Chloramine is more stable in the network but has a distinctive taste and is harder to filter, so a good activated-carbon filter makes a clear difference.
  • Why does the water taste different after heavy rain? The local catchments are sensitive to weather. After events like the 2022 floods, elevated sediment and organic matter prompt extra treatment, which can affect taste and clarity. Carbon and sediment filtration in our coolers helps keep your drinking water consistent.
  • Which cooler suits a Sunshine Coast office? Freestanding for shared spaces; plumbed-in for continuous supply without bottle handling.
  • How often do I replace the filter? Every 6–12 months, depending on usage and water quality. After wet-weather events with higher sediment, you may notice cartridges needing service sooner. See our Replacement Filter Cartridges Guide.
